The Lalgudi Duologue
The Lalgudi Duologue (GJR Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi)
In the context of classical violinists in India, Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi occupy pride of place. Pioneered and nurtured by their father and guru Padma Bhushan Lalgudi G. Jayaraman, they are the torchbearers of the venerable Lalgudi style, where the violin closely mirrors the human voice. Though rooted firmly and proudly in their legacy, Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi have each created their own individual styles which complement one another. The duo’s music is an interesting study in contrasts. Together, their music is classical, but refreshingly contemporary; its form and feel are minimalist, but at its core, it is intricately complex and layered. Their instrumental mastery combined with musical acumen and creativity have earned them numerous honors, including the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi—the highest recognition in Carnatic music.
The duo’s presentation is a tribute to their father and guru. Along with Jayaraman’s original compositions, they will present a repertoire that resonates deeply with their shared musical heritage. They are accompanied by Arvind Shankar on the mridangam.
Following their performance, join us for a post-concert talk with Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi, as well as a Q&A session with the artists.
